How is Space of Mind different from Public Schools, Private Schools, and other Homeschooling services?

Space of Mind is built upon a homeschooling foundation, which allows for the maximum amount of flexibility, creativity and customization to make learning fun, engaging and efficient for every student. The mission is to reduce school-related stress and not to create more, so everything we do takes a family’s lifestyle, budget, community and resources into account.

How do virtual students socialize at Space of Mind?

Students who participate in virtual schoolhouse coaching are able to connect with other virtual students, as well as those in our campus-based programs. We are always looking to connect new friends, so we’re on the lookout for introductions to be made.

Does Space of Mind offer in-person learning?

Yes, we have a 10,000 sq. ft. campus in downtown Delray Beach that offers all of the academic disciplines, as well as a full spectrum of creative arts, including culinary, fine art, engineering, music, theater, gardening, digital media, technology and creative writing.

Does Space of Mind support students with learning disabilities?

Absolutely! We specialize in working with outside-the-box learners, especially those with really busy brains, like ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Dyslexia, Speech and Language Disorders, Visual and Auditory Processing Disorders, Giftedness, and the like. We also have a sweet spot for helping students who have endured trauma and might be experiencing PTSD. We tailor all teaching and learning to each students’ ideal attention span, organizational and communication skills, learning styles and interests. We differentiate all work to meet each student’s academic readiness level.

How is the transition for new students?

SOM makes starting up so easy! Our Orientation for students and parents will introduce you to our curriculum, culture, lingo and program. By the time classes start, it’s like you’ve been one of us forever!

What is the typical schedule for students?

Virtual student schedules are set based on each family’s schedule. We have coaches who can work mornings, afternoons and evenings! We do try to take the weekends off, though. Online classes are generally 45 minutes of direct instruction with short check-ins as needed. Part-time students do between 3-5 weekly sessions, and full-time students do 6-10 sessions.

How do colleges view homeschooled students?

Colleges LOVE homeschooled students! All of the research has shown that students who are homeschooled are more likely to succeed from day one in college, as they already have learned some key life skills like independence, setting goals, creating effective learning environments and our personal favorite, asking for help. Homeschooled students are also generally looked at in a separate pool of applicants due to the more random nature of their transcripts, which is a huge benefit since they aren’t weeded out by algorithms first.

Is there homework at Space of Mind?

That depends. With virtual learning, there are projects that need to be completed offline, but it really depends on the student’s ability to work independently. We want to set everyone up for success and eliminate typical homework stress, so we’re super conscious of what will work. We do ask that students read outside of coaching sessions and those students that are able do have work to complete between sessions.

How much parent involvement is needed?

That also depends. If you want us to do everything, then sign up for the full-time virtual schoolhouse, and parents can be pretty hands-off. If you are a parent looking to do the heavy lifting without the grunts, then use us to help you design your curriculum, schedule and overall experience. If you need more support, we can offer parent coaching and/or private coaching in any academic or creative discipline to supplement the parent-led schooling.

How do I comply with local state laws while homeschooling at Space of Mind?

If you are enrolled as a virtual student, either part or full-time, we will ensure that you are in compliance with your state.

What does Space of Mind look for in future students?

SOM is looking for students who haven’t traditionally loved school. We love a challenge, so bring on the school refusal, the busy brains, the learning challenges, the anxiety; we’ve got you covered. We love families who are engaged, supportive and willing to buck the system in order to create a learning environment that works.

All kids should have access to a “gifted” curriculum.

It breeds creativity, communication skills and critical thinking. It’s also differentiated to the learner’s personal needs, interests, attention span, cognitive pace and learning styles.
